Kathak

Storytelling on swift feet.

Origin

North India. Born in temple courtyards and refined in Mughal courts, Kathak weaves rhythm, spin and narrative into one breath.

Hallmarks

  • Crisp footwork (tatkar) over layered tala cycles
  • Pirouettes (chakkars) and sculpted hand gestures
  • Abhinaya — expressive storytelling from epics and thumri

What to expect in class

Sessions open with a warm-up, move into footwork drills against the tabla, then build a small composition you can take home.

Good for

Anyone curious about rhythm, presence, and the joy of spinning.
